BISP 8171 program
Launched in July 2008, the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) aims to eradicate poverty and create a social safety net for the country’s poor. Lakhs of people have benefited from the program’s financial assistance in the form of monthly stipends.
The BISP program alone has distributed a staggering Rs. 90 billion ($900 million) to more than 5.4 million participants in 2016. The stipend was paid through a smart card system and fixed at Rs. 19,338 (approx. $195), with this amount being updated as per the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The UK Department for International Development provided $244 million (or 27%) of the total funding for the program in 2016. The Government of Pakistan provides most of the funding for this program.
